Heading to the Movies: Our Night with Hamnet by Jared Harding Wilson

Movie 🎥 Poster: Hamnet = The story of William Shakespeare and his family

By Jared Harding Wilson

Tonight, my wife, Sarah, and I are headed to the theater to see Hamnet. Shakespeare has been a constant in our relationship since the very beginning. Sarah is a true Shakespearean—she’s performed in his plays, owns a copy of every work we still have a record of, and has a knowledge of his life and history.

Our tradition of seeing his plays performed at the Shakespeare Festival in Cedar City, Utah, started back in 2019, the year we met. That first year was an adventure; we hiked to the top of Mount Timpanogos and ended up having to literally run down the side of the mountain to make it to the show on time. We barely made it, but it was worth it to see Hamlet. It was my first time seeing it, and I was blown away by how the actor managed to find the comedy in such a famous tragedy.

We are going into this movie “unlearned”—no spoilers and no reviews. We’ve only seen the trailer, which was enough to get me feeling emotional. Between the footage I’ve seen and the fact that Sarah knows so many of the historical stories surrounding William Shakespeare, I’m curious to see how the film’s portrayal matches up with what she knows. I have a feeling the tears might fall tonight.

I’ll be back tomorrow to post a full review and let you know what we thought!

Is there a movie you’re looking to see soon in the theaters? Let me know which one you think looks good. Also, what is your favorite Shakespeare play, or is there a film adaptation that you think got it perfectly right? Let me know in the comments!

I love to explore, learn, read good books, hike, campout, run, travel this beautiful world, create delicious food, carve wood, play music on a variety of instruments, garden, and have faith in Jesus Christ as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I grew up in North Carolina, and now live in the mountainous state of Utah.
