“Do or do not. There is no try.” — Yoda
This iconic Star Wars quote is more than just movie dialogue; it is a profound philosophy on commitment. Within the LDS community, many have noted the uncanny resemblance between Yoda’s wisdom and the 12th President of the Church, Spencer W. Kimball.

President Kimball was famous for his plea to “lengthen your stride.” He taught that half-hearted efforts don’t yield spiritual results. He famously said:
“When we have done all that we can do, then He will step in and perform the rest.”
Stop Revving in Neutral
I often think of our potential like a high-performance car sitting in a driveway. It’s polished, powerful, and ready to go. But too often, we sit in the driver’s seat revving the engine in neutral. We make a lot of noise, we feel the vibration of “trying,” but we aren’t actually moving toward our destiny. If there is something in your life that needs to change, don’t just stay in “Park”—give it everything you have to shift forward.
Drive with a Heart of Purpose
When you finally put that car in gear, remember that you aren’t driving an empty road or alone in the car. I have learned this from sad experience from choices I made years ago. Your life is a vessel that carries the hopes, hearts, and well-being of those you love most. As you commit to “doing” and changing for the better, do it with a good and gentle purpose.
When you drive with intention, you create a safe space for your family and friends to journey with you. Every mile you gain in your own growth is a mile you travel toward being the person they need you to be. Don’t just drive to arrive; drive to lift, to love, and to bring light to everyone riding along with you.
The Takeaway:
Don’t just make noise today. Shift out of neutral, lengthen your stride, and drive toward a better version of yourself for the sake of those you love.
