A Joyful Musical Service: Performing at a Senior Living Facility and Stake Fireside by Jared Harding Wilson

I had one of those experiences that reminds you why music is such a powerful force for good. Our LDS ward’s brass ensemble and choir had the opportunity to perform at a local senior living facility—a service I’ve been hoping to do for quite some time. It all came together thanks to the activities coordinator there, who happens to be a member of our ward. She reached out and asked if we’d be willing to come play and sing for the residents. Of course, we jumped at the chance!

For the brass ensemble, five out of our eight members were able to make it, which turned out perfectly. We had a fun mix of instrumentation, including a saxophone player stepping in on a trumpet part—it added such a unique flavor! I got to play the Tuba part on trombone, and we shared some uplifting holiday and inspirational pieces like the Canadian Brass Quintet’s arrangement of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and an arrangement of Joy to the World by E. Strickling. The residents were absolutely delightful; many had that childlike wonder and joy as they listened, clapped along, and shared smiles. It was heartwarming to bring a little light into their day through music.

The choir also had a strong turnout—more than I thought could make it! As the director, I was thrilled to lead them in a few beautiful numbers. We sang classic Christmas Music Hymns and some beautiful arrangements like O Holy Night arranged by Sally DeFord, The First Noel / Pachelbel’s Canon arranged by Michael Clawson, and One Small Babe by Lynn S. Lund. The residents’ faces lit up during the singing, and it felt like a true act of service.

Just a few days later, both the brass ensemble and choir got to perform again at our stake’s music fireside/devotional event. It was exciting to share the stage with talented groups from other wards. Our choir went last out of all the performers, and we sang two songs that showcased the incredible voices in our group. I’m constantly amazed by their talent—many humbly say they “don’t know how to sing very much,” but they’re epically gifted! Our ward is truly blessed with amazing musicians, and I’m honored to direct them.

This got me reflecting on my own musical journey. Directing has been a learning process—like playing an instrument, you have to practice to gain confidence. You can’t just wave your arms; it takes intention and growth! I’ve directed all sorts of ensembles over the years: strings, saxophone choirs, guitar and bass groups, even a volunteer orchestra once. Back in high school, I dreamed of becoming a band director, so my senior year was packed with music classes. I played in both the symphonic and Concert bands, took an independent study learning new instruments (French horn, clarinet, tuba, baritone/euphonium—on top of my trombone), and even joined the Duke Youth Orchestra, jazz combo, Jazz, Marching, and Pep bands. Even a Ska Band in college. I didn’t quite get to flute or saxophone, but the list of groups I’ve been part of goes on. Music has been one of the greatest blessings in my life, helping turn things around for the better in ways I’m forever grateful for.

Experiences like these reinforce how music connects us, lifts spirits, and serves others. It was such a good reminder of that!

What about you? Do you play an instrument—if so, which one is your favorite? Have you ever thought about picking one up (and which would you choose)? Or maybe share a fun music story from your life—I’d love to hear in the comments below! 🎶

I love to explore, learn, read good books, hike, campout, run, travel this beautiful world, create delicious food, carve wood, play music on a variety of instruments, garden, and have faith in Jesus Christ as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I grew up in North Carolina, and now live in the mountainous state of Utah.

  1. This is wonderful, Jared. I’m so glad you all went and did that! No musical talent here, unfortunately. I briefly played the trumpet in Jr. High, loved the parades, but could not seem to march and play at the same time, lol, so that was short lived 🙂
