Quote of the Day: Starting Late, Thriving with Faith by Jared Harding Wilson

By Jared Harding Wilson

“You can start late, look different, be uncertain, and still succeed.”

– Misty Copeland

Misty Copeland, the first African American principal dancer at the American Ballet Theatre, shattered barriers in a world where tradition often dictated who could succeed. Her quote, born from her own journey of defying odds—starting ballet late at 13, facing racial and financial hurdles, and overcoming self-doubt—speaks to the power of resilience. It’s a reminder that success isn’t confined to a single timeline or mold. Copeland’s story inspires us to embrace our unique paths, no matter how unconventional.

For me, this quote hits home. Life hasn’t followed a straight line. I had a reboot later in life, starting over when many my age seemed settled. Social media can amplify that pressure, showcasing younger folks hitting milestones I was only beginning to chase. Comparison crept in, whispering doubts about my worth or progress. But I decided to live fully, right where I am, and keep moving forward.

My compassionate wife, Sarah, has been my anchor, helping me grow into a better man with her love and wisdom. My job, challenging yet rewarding, pushes me to evolve daily. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving as choir director fills my soul with purpose, blending faith and music. Recently, I ran a half marathon—beating my goal time, and I’m now preparing for a full marathon, proof that starting late doesn’t mean falling short. My family, both on my side and on my wife’s side are incredibly supportive, caring and inspiring.

Yet, life has its trials. Both my parents are battling cancer, and I sometimes wrestle with self-doubt, bullying myself over past failures from years ago. Family drama, too, can stir tension. But my faith teaches me to find strength in Christ. As President Russell M. Nelson said, “The Lord loves effort, and effort brings rewards.” This reminds me that each step, even through pain, is seen and sanctified. I’m deeply grateful for the trials that refine me and the joys that uplift me, trusting that Heavenly Father is guiding me toward a hopeful, triumphant future.

I love to explore, learn, read good books, hike, campout, run, travel this beautiful world, create delicious food, carve wood, play music on a variety of instruments, garden, and have faith in Jesus Christ as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I grew up in North Carolina, and now live in the mountainous state of Utah.
