My Hobble Creek Half Marathon: A Big Step Toward a Bigger Goal by Jared Harding Wilson

A New Path Forward

I had my sights set on the Cedar City Half Marathon, drawn to its stunning desert views, but a scheduling conflict sent me on a different adventure. I found the Hobble Creek Half Marathon—a 13.1-mile journey through a gorgeous Utah canyon. This unexpected detour turned into a really good experience I’m grateful for, and a solid step toward my dream of running a full marathon.

Training for the Adventure

Over 12 weeks, I hit the road four days a week, each run pushing me further—5 miles, 8, then 10. Every step built my confidence for the half marathon and my bigger marathon goal. I picked up some key tricks: breathing in and out through my nose kept me steady, loose hands made my strides feel easy, and my Altra running shoes, with their wide toe box, let my feet move freely. By race day, I was pumped to tackle the canyon.

Race Day: An Early Start

The morning of the race was an adventure in itself. Late registration landed me on the 4:30 AM shuttle, rolling up the canyon in the dark. My wife and I had stopped by Runners Corner the day before to grab my race bib and a handy pouch for my gear, which organizers would bring to the finish. Pro tip: pack a hoodie for that chilly mountain air. I skipped it and was shivering as we lined up.

The canyon buzzed with energy as runners gathered. My training averaged 10-minute miles, pointing to a 2-hour-11-minute finish. My goal? Break 2 hours. With my heart pumping, I joined the pack as the starting horn rang out.

Racing Through the Canyon

Running down Hobble Creek Canyon was a blast—trees soaring overhead, sunlight flickering through, and the road stretching ahead like an invitation. The downhill flow felt amazing, my Altras cushioning every step, my nose-breathing keeping me focused. Then came mile 9: a steep uphill climb. My legs burned, but I pushed through. That hill reminded me that challenges—on the course or in life—make us stronger. I crested it, ready for the final push.

Crossing the Finish Line

The last mile ignited a burst of energy. I could hear the finish line’s vibe—music, cheers, a full-on party. I sprinted with all I had, crossing in 1 hour and 57 minutes, an 8:57-per-mile pace. I’d crushed my sub-2-hour goal by 3 minutes! Out of 437 runners, I placed 198th overall and 11th in my age group. The finish was awesome: food, music, free massages, and chiropractors easing sore muscles. I stood there, sweaty and grinning, grateful for every moment.

A Step Toward the Marathon Dream

The Hobble Creek Half Marathon was a really good experience—one I’m so glad I had. It showed me that hard work and persistence pay off, and that every challenge builds strength for the next. This race wasn’t just about 13.1 miles; it was a big step toward my goal of running a full marathon. I’m already excited for the next race, dreaming of 26.2 miles.

To anyone considering a half marathon: train consistently, trust your gear (Altras are gold), and bring that hoodie. Most of all, enjoy the journey.
